Newest Culver City Rooftop Lounge is a Stunner
Summer nights, and the livin’ is easy. Culver City will never be the next Sunset Blvd,, nor can it compete with Downtown LA rooftops, but it has some emerging bar culture complete day-to-night drinking spots — that shouldn’t be overlooked.
So when you’re living centrally in Culver City and do not want to leave your hood - where should you go for a pool dip, some grub and great cocktails and wine? The newly opened Canopy Club.
The Canopy Club replaces the now shuttered Celestina Club, which was part of the Etta team; which opened during covid times with geometric globe bubbles where one can lounge in a plastic bubble and gaze up at the stars. Celestina’s website announces that they are looking for a bigger space! I will definitely keep tabs on that one.
The Canopy Club’s transition was a whirlwind. A brief 6 week close and then it reopens with a bright, tropical-meets-Palm-Springs interiors. Bold pops of sherbet oranges next to neutral beiges, just add cactuses, sand and rocks and you’re basically at the beach.
To reach this secretive rooftop, enter The Shay Hotel lobby, and then go to the top floor via the elevators. It’ll spit you out into the hostess stand where you can be seated at the open air bar or (my favorite) poolside, so you can pretend to bask in sunny luxury. We watched the sunset on a beautiful Friday night; cotton candy pink sunsets which matched the poolside pillows. Magical.
As of now, you can still enjoy the pool when you’re not a hotel guest by booking a pool day pass at Resort Pass ($50 at the time of writing). We were dining just before the Fourth of July weekend, and a little bird told me they were fully booked! And this is with a soft-opening aka they did not announce their opening to anyone! Their website still listed the Canopy Club as “coming soon” when it was clearly fully open and operating!
On this particular, soft-opening Friday evening, the restaurant and bar were only 30% full. I believe the staff wanted a slow staff to ramp up, being as everyone is still learning. They seemed posed to be ever popular and compete with the old days of Hotel Erwin’s rooftop nights. Fingers crossed.
Let’s skip to, perhaps, the most important part - the food and drinks! I got the Frenchie Omelette ($17); which was as expected - cheesy, eggy, herby and the potatoes were my favorite as they were extra crispy fried in just the right amount of oil. It was breakfast as dinner for me, and I would get it again. It was nothing special but also acceptable. The pretty atmosphere, eating poolside, al fresco were the highlights. Thus the food did not detract but compliment the experience. For my beverage of choice, I ordered the Gruner Veltliner white wine from Santa Barbara - and it was yummy!
My friend ordered the CC Burger ($20), which came out oozing with more cheese! She ate hers happily and said she’d order it again - so I take that as high praise from one foodie to another.
The pool and rooftop location catapults it to the top of my list of summer things to do. If only they had a musican playing a guitar and singing pop songs in the corner (le sigh)! From the color blocked umbrellas to the oversized, greenleafed wallpapers - it’s perfectly Instagrammable (so come ready to snap some pics).
The venue is perfect for a work happy hour, a casual (trying to impress but not look like you’re trying to impress) breakfast, brunch, lunch - and/or a date night. Enjoy roof-top glory at the Canopy Club. It’s the perfect LA fancy - walking the line between casual and fancy - and doing it well.
The space is relatively small - so I can image them filling up quickly now that they are officially open and advertising it. EaterLA’s write up helped officialize its opening.
And for the ending, I now leave you with some drool worthy snaps of the pool and space. Yes, I’m still dreaming of it - so feast your eyes on the below and check it out yourself.
