Ora: Leimert Park Cafe, Reopened and Reimagined
Ora, the revamped, cafe that was once known as Hot and Cool Cafe, stands as a vibrant cornerstone in the growing arts and cultural center of Leimert Park—a fact that fills me with immense excitement.
The transformation is nothing short of astonishing. The previously eclectic and offbeat atmosphere of Hot and Cool Cafe, with floor-to-ceiling murals, reminding me of a friend's cozy living room, has given way to the sleek and sophisticated ambiance of the new Ora. The original vibrant red murals have disappeared, replaced by an airy, sleek cafe that is a defining feature in the new iteration of Leimert Village. It boldly declares, "We’re proud"; as they should be.
The original warehouse space, characterized by its concrete interiors, and high ceilings echoed with its warehouse roots. Now, the revamped Ora provides an ideal environment for productive work and professional calls. Picture yourself seated amidst plush, turquoise cushions and curved booths—this is the new reality.
The interior layout is thoughtfully designed, with a centeral S-shaped, bench with accompanying wood side tables for working or drinking lattes. Towards the other end, larger tables and chairs for a small-group meeting hug the built-in shelving unit—a testament to the versatility of the space.
Right now, they're gearing up to kick off a monthly Sunday Jazz night, and the anticipation is real. South LA deserves a livelier nightlife instead of funneling our dollars into West Adams and Culver City, we want to spend our money and time nearby. The Village's after-dark scene was often limited to events at The World Stage. Could this be the start of a wave of new happenings? Fingers crossed for more South LA nightlife.
The menu, while revamped, is still familiar and resembles its former self with smoothies, salads and a mixture of plant-focused plates (yay from this vegetarian!). The only dish that’s a holdover from the past: the Coconut Curry (who can blame them). They know how to nourish you from the belly to the soul! I’m leaning towards - the food is even better than before!
My treat to myself, was the Peach Tartine, which arrived as two perfectly diagonal slices of fluffy, purple bread. Topped with a lavish spread of housemade labne, grilled peaches a drizzle of honey adorned with mint leaves, it was a cut above my usual homemade treats so I was smiling from ear to ear! My Tartine took 10-15 minutes from order to in my hand, a testament to their polished efficiency—one person on the cash register, another working the kitchen.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the huge success of how Leimert Park businesses gained control of their destiny by purchasing the Degnan Boulevard and West 43rd Street building which houses their businesses in July 2023! They secured a $6.5-million loan from LA County Supervise Holly Mitchell; read more of that success here.
Vibes: The vibe is bright, airy, warm and welcoming with a plant-forward, all-day menu. Casually cool without trying.
Parking: Plenty of metered street parking, and free street parking. On Sundays and some Saturdays, you may need to park further due to the weekly Leimert Village Market which shuts down the street for vendors.
Public transportation: It is right around the corner from the Leimert Park Metro K Line station (Crenshaw line).
